SieMatic S2 Kitchen, Preston
No room for improvement
Chris and Julie’s kitchen wasn’t even built when Stuart Frazer was asked to design it. Not only did they need to adhere to strict planning rules on their barn conversion, but they needed the kitchen to be suitable for their disabled son, Robert.
Tasked with creating a family kitchen in a difficult, dark area, Sarah Newton from Stuart Frazer helped design the layout of the space first before she started on the actual kitchen. By moving some rooms and knocking walls down, Sarah created the perfect shape that made the most of its position and its large floor to ceiling windows.
Â
Says Julie, “Everything was Sarah’s idea, from where windows were located right down to all the matching soft furnishings.â€Â Julie particularly liked the fact that Sarah understood the needs of her son, Robert, and created a space that was safe, workable and designed entirely with him in mind. “Sarah was brilliant at understanding Robert’s needs, for now and for the future. She designed the kitchen so that a wheelchair could move round it easily, and made sure that the table was accessible and could comfortably fit a wheelchair. She located the sink and hob so that they were out of his reach in a safe place and recommended a hot tap that was a safer and a more convenient option than a kettle. All the appliances Sarah suggested are suitable for Robert as they can’t be turned on with a knob or other easily turned device.â€
The family love entertaining and were particularly pleased with the casual seating area that Stuart Frazer designed to show the views outside at their best. When friends and family come over they can cook and entertain in the same room, which is important to them.
Â
The kitchen really comes alive at night thanks to a nuanced lighting scheme. Stuart Frazer made the most of the contemporary nature of the building and the large windows and the result is a stunning kitchen that becomes a totally different, relaxing space in the evening.
Â
For Julie, having a Stuart Frazer kitchen had been her dream for years.
